Influence of climate factors on vector aedes density of dengue

Abstract:
  Objective   To explore the relation between aedes density and climate factors, and to provide scientific method to prevent and supervise dengue fever.   Methods   To collect data of dengue fever case, aedes vector's supervision and climate(including average air temperautre, lowest air temperature, highest air temperaure, sunlight, rainfall and relative humidity).The data is analyzed by correlation analysis method and stepwise regression method.   Results   Meteorology parameter correlation with aedes density are rainfall, sunlight, average air temperature, lowest average air temperature and relative humidity, the regression equation is obtained by stepwise regression analysis, viz: YBI=24.800+0.826 X1+0.020X2-0.418X3X1 represents lowest average air temperature, X2 rainfall and X3 relative humidity.   Conclusion   The influence of climate factor on vector aedes density is complicated, but its primary influence factors are lowest average air temperature, rainfall and relative humidity.Of course, change of aedes density is very correlative with standard of living and convention of living of local population.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study the association between some trace elements and viral hepatit is E.   Methods   The contents of trace elements Cu, Fe, Zn and Se in HEV-infected serum was detected respectively by spectrophtometer and then statistical analysis was done on the data by SPSS for win 9.0.   Results   Both in anti-HEV positive group and HEV patients group, the amounts of Zn and Se in serum were statistically significant lower, Fe and value Cu/Zn and value Fe/Zn were significanthigher compared with control group.s.Logistic regression analysis showed that trace elements Se, value Cu/Zn and value Zn/Se should be involved in the regression equation.   Conclusion   Trace elements of Zn and Se had significant effect on the HEV infection.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study rare earth level in blood and its relationship with health of residents with long-time and low-level expoure.   Methods   To selecte two villages residents living in rare earth ore central area as exposed group and one village residents from the same county living in non-rare earth ore area as control group.To use ICP-MS to measure residents blood rare earth level and at the same time examine 25 index to reflect residents health condition.SPSS was used to analyze data.   Results   In ex posed and contro l groups, 328 and 284 residents were studied and their aver age rare earth total amount in blood were 4.929 and 1.684 μg/L respectively.R are earth total amount in blood and 15 rate earth elements in exposed group were higher than control group significantly(P=0.000).The highest amount element of rate earth elements in blood was La and then were Ce and Nd.The total proportion of La, Ce, Nd in exposed and control groups were 68.72% and 68.62% respectively.In exposed group, systolic blood pressure was lower, pulse was more rapid, hand twist speed was slower and WBC, HGB, HCT, PLT, blood Ca, blood glucose were lower than those in control group.Residents whose HGB, PLT, blood Ca, blood glucose lower than normal value were much more in exposed group than in control group significantly.   Conclusion   Rare earth level in blood in exposed group was higher than in control group significantly.Rare earth in blood of residents in Xunwu was mainly La, Ce, Nd and other light rare earth elements.Residents exposure to rare earth may influence blood pressure, blood cell, nervous reflection, blood Ca and glucose.

Abstract:
  Objective   To observe the effects of mixed rare earth nitrate[RE(NO3)3]on immune function of mice off-spring and whether these effects result from RE through the route of placenta.   Methods   RE(NO3)3 was administered to mice by gavage at dosage of 2, 20, 200 mg/kg during gestational period.The weights of spleen and thy mus, the spleen plaque for ming cells(PFC), the delayed type hypersensitivety(DTH)and the char coal clearance were determined.   Results   The results after weaning showed that the contents of La, Ce, Pr and Nd in 200mg/kg dosage group were higher than those of control group significantly, at the dosage of 2.0mg/kg, the number of IgM-PFC was increased 82.2%, the rate of clearance and clearance index of 2.0, 20.0mg/kg were higher significantly than that of control(P < 0.05).2.0mg/kg RE(NO3)3 could enhance the DTH significantly(P < 0.05).The results after weaning for 3 weeks sho wed that the number of IgM-PFC of 200mg/kg dose groups were 36.9% lower than that of control group, the rate of clearance and clear ance index of 200mg/kg were lower sig nificantly than that of control(P < 0.05).No significant changes in DTH were observed in each exposed group.   Conclusion   RE(NO3)3 can affect the immune function of mice.s offspring, which played a role viaplacenta.
Study on relation between heat shock proteins and heat stress of marcher in desert

Abstract:
  Objective   To explore the relation between heat shock proteins and heat stress of marchers without load in dry-heat desert.   Methods   The plasma HSP70 and HSP27, heart beat, rectal temperature and body heat storage index(BH2 SI)of 56 marchers and 14 controls were detected.   Results   Either at the speed of 3.5 km/h or 5.0 km/h, the plasma HSP27 in the marching groups were much more than the control(P < 0.05);and the plasma HSP70 in the marching groups were slightly over the control(P > 0.05);the heart beat in marching groups were more than the control(P < 0.05).BHSIs were much more than the control except that marching for 1 hour at 5.0 km/h.   Conclusion   There was a close relation between HSP27 and heat stress, and no relation between HSP70 and heat stress without load in dry-heat desert.Therefore, the plasma HSP27 was better than HSP70 in the monitor of heat stress.It was the optimum acclimatization to heat that people march for 2 hours at 5.0 km/h in dry-heat desert.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study the effects of HSP70 over expression on the sensitivity of the K 562 cell to the chemotheraputic drugs.   Methods   The cadmium chloride was used to induce the K 562 cell HSP70 over expression, and then the chemotheraputic drugs which were methotrex ate(MTX), mitomycin C, cisplatin(PDD)and bleomycin were added to the culture medium of the HSP 70 over expression cells until 16 hours.Reversed transcription PCR(RT-PCR)was used to detect the HSP-70 mRNA and viability were measured by MTT methods.   Results   Cadimium chloride could induced the HSP70 over expression which showed high expression after induced for four hours.The higher HSP 70 expression were, the lower the sensitivity of cells to chemotherapic drugs was.   Conclusion   The HSP70 induced by cadmium chloride could reduce the sensitivity of the cell to the chemotheraputic drugs and the effects were just as same as that of pre-heat.

Abstract:
  Objective   To get the relationship between magnesium and multiplex polymer ase chain reaction.   Methods   With different magnesium concentration of buffer and with different magnesium concentration of buffer that without KCl to perform multiplex polymerase cthain reaction.   Results   At the higher magnesium concentration unspecific products appeared, but they gradually decreased in intensity tow ards 10 mmol/L mag nesium concentrations.At 5 mmol/L mag nesium concentration without KCl salt, there were specific products, but increasing with the magnesium concentration, at 50 mmol/L, the multiplex polymerase chain reaction was completely inhibited, there were no specific products.   Conclusion   The concentration of magnesium was necessary for Tag DNA polymerase.Tag DNA polymerase required free magnesium.2 mmol/L concentration of magnesium was very best for the five genes multiplex polymerase chain reaction.

Abstract:
  Objective   To express the recombinant Tp47 protein of Treponema pallidum(TP)in E.Coli, and to developenzyme immunoassay(EIA)for serological diagnosis of syphilis.   Methods   The target gene Tp47 was amplified from the Tp complete genome by polymer ase chain reaction(PCR).The PCR products were cloned into the expression vector pET-30a to generate recombinant plasmid pET-30a-Tp47.The recombinant Tp47 protein was expressed in E.Coli, and purified with affinity chr omatog raphy columns.Then it was used for the development of EIA.   Results   T he recombinant T p47 protein with the molecular weight of 39kDa was expressed in the supernatant of E.coli and contained about 12% of the total cellular protein.The antigenicity of the precombinant T p47 protein was confir med by both western immunoblot and EIA.11 THHA(Treponema pallidum hemag glutination assay)positive and 28 negative sera were tested by the EIA, with the sensitivity of 100% (11/11)and the specificity of 96.4% (27/28).   Conclusion   The recombinant T p47 protein can be used for development of EIA for serological diagnosis of syphilis.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study the influence of seasickness on serumiron, copper, zinc, urea, Cr, LDH, CK.   Methods   Serum was collected from thirty male(20-22 years old)before and after seasickness to analyze the variety of serumiron, copper, zinc, urea, Cr, LDH, CK.   Results   Serum zinc, urea, Cr increased significantly from 10.60±0.33, 4.29±0.18, 88.13±3.03μmol/L to 11.98±0.44, 7.11±0.30、108.59±3.90μmol/L respectively after seasickness(P < 0.01), serunt iron decreased remarkably from 20.48±.96μmol/L to 9.68±0166μmol/L(P < 0.01).There was no significant change of serum copper, LDH, CK.   Conclusion   After seasickness, serum zinc, urea, Cr increased significantly and serum iron decreased remarkably, there was no significant change of serum copper, LDH, CK.

Abstract:
  Objective   To sutdy the cause and effect relation between TGFβ1、EGF、P53、PCNA and prostatic cancer.Samples came from surgical operation and tissues biopsy.   Methods   Thirty-six patients with prostatic cancer were analyzed and explored by immunohistochemistry.   Results   It was stronger positive(> 80%)for the cell nucleus and cell thick liquid of cancer cell as well as surrounding matrix in prostatic cancer tissues.Expression of P53 in prostatic cancer tissues was also observed with antibodies against them.Positive stain of P53 was found both in nuclei and cytoplasm of epithelium cells in prostatic cancer tissues.Innumoposit ive stain of PCNA was presented in prostatic cancer cell(> 60%).   Conclusion   Mutation of P53 occurred in prostatic cancer tissues and reflected actively proliferative capacity and status of cancer cells.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study transfusion transmitted virus(TTV)infection and the possibility of the sexual transmission in STD patients.   Methods   Anti-TTV IgG was tested by ELISA in the serum of 237 cases of STD patients and 80 cases of normal married adults.   Results   Anti-TTV IgG positive rate was much higher in STD patients than in normal married adults(P < 0.005).The higher positive rates in different STD diseases were syphilis, genital herpes, syphilis amalgamating NGU, syphils amalg amating CA, genital herpes amalgamating NGU.The lower positive rate was NGU.There was no significance between the positive rate of anti TTVI gG of male STD patients and that of female STD patients(P > 0.05).There was not iceable significance(P < 0.05).The positive rate of anti-TTVIG of patients spouses was 30.36%, that of normal peoples spouses was 4.55%.Twenty three cases in anti-TTVI gG positive STD group and 7 cases in anti-TTV IgG negative STD group had over six months of frequent brothels history(P < 0.005).The average number of sexual inter course mates was 16.80 in anti-TTV IgG positive STD group and 7.53 in anti-TTV IgG negative STD group(P < 0.01).   Conclusion   There was a relatively high TTV infection rate in STD patients.The more time of frequent brothels history and the more numbers of differ ent sexual intercourse mates patients had, the more possibility STD patients were infected TTV.This indicated that sexual transmission might be an other infectious route of TTV.

Abstract:
  Objective   To discuss the relationship between IAA and EHT and discover its mechanism.   Methods   Fifty-eight patients of EHT were randomly selected from 600 teachers under 60 years old in primary and middle schools in BeiPiao city as case group, 33 teachers were randomly sampled as control group from the same crowd with no hyper tension, no liver or nephritic diseases, no diabetes.Then the content of IAA in the two groups was measur ed with quantitative method.The statistic methods were χ2-test and noncondition-Logistic analysis.   Results   IAA of EHT group was apparently higher than that of control, they were 10.34%, 44.83%, 44.83% in EHT group.That in control group were 33.33%, 48.49% and 18.18%.There was significant difference proved by χ2-test(P < 0.05).There was dose-reaction relationship between IAA and EHT.By noncondition-Logistic analysis, family history, IN and IAA were involved in the model.   Conclusion   There was a relationship between IAA and EHT.IAA was likely an independent risk factor of EHT.

Abstract:
  Objective   To elucidate the mechanism of per methrin on central nervous system(CNS).   Methods   The levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)mRNA and protein expression in ratcor tex and hippocampus were examined by RT-PCR, dot blot, flow cytometry analysis and immunochemistry.   Results   RT-PCR and dot blot analysis indicated the levels of BDNFmRNF expression in rat brain were up-regulated by permethrin(PM)administration at a high dose(PM1, 400mg/kg°d, ip)one times and a low dose(PM2, 200mg/kg°d, ip)for 5 days, especially in cortex.However the protein expression of BDNF was not correspond to the level of BDNF mRNA: in spite of marked increase of BDNF protein expression of rat cortex in PM1 and PM2 groups were observed by flow cytometry analysis and immunochemistry, the levels of BDNF protein in rathippocampus remained unchanged except CA1 region in PM1 group.   Conclusion   The involvement of induction of BDNF expression in ratbrain may play a role in neur oprotective profiles of CNS injury.

Abstract:
  Objective   To prepare the artificial fiber complexes and examine its role in lipid content in comparison with other three single fibers in hyper lipidemia rats.   Methods   Forty-eighthealthy, female Wistar rats(50-80g)were randomly divided into six groups based on body weight.All five kinds of DF(cellulose-group B, pectin-group C, sodium alginategroup D, cellulose-pectin complex-group E, cellulose-sodium alginate complex-group F)were given at a level of 10% in the diet fed on a lipid-rich diet.The control group(group A)was fed on a lipid-rich diet alone without DF.A fter eight weeks, the effect on growth and development and lipid metabolism in rats were studied.   Results   (1) Five kinds o f DF did not affect the growth and development of the expreimental rats.(2)Compared with the control group, all DF groups can lower lipids, especrial fiber complexes.(3)The fecal weight and fat contents in all DF groups were significantly higher than that in control group, especially for fiber complex groups.(4)There were obviously correlation between serum lipids and fecal fat contents.   Conclusion   These kinds of DF had the effect of lowering lipids to so me extent in rats, and fiber complexes were more effective than single fibers.
Effects of selenium on activities of antioxidant enzymes and gene expression in rat's livers

Abstract:
  Objective   To explore the effects of selenium(Se)supplementation on the activities of antioxidant enzymes and gene expression in rat's livers.   Methods   Different levels of selenium were given to the rats and the changes of some parameters were observed in rat's livers which included the contents of Se and malondialdehyde(MDA), the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px), thioredoxin reductase(TR)and TR mRNA expression.   Results   20μg/kg Se supplementation could decreased MDA content and upregulated the activities of SOD, CAT, GSH-Px significantly in rat's livers, whereas 40, 80μg/kg Se supplementation increased MDA content and decreased the activities of CAT, GSH-Px, TR and TR mRNA level.Se levels were elevated dose-dependently.   Conclusion   Appropriate dosage of selenium showed good effects on antioxidant function and Se overexposure can result in chronic Se intoxication.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study the mechanism of NiSO4, K2CrO7, CoCl2 and the mixture to damage liver of mice in order to provide theoretical evidence for preventing and curing joint toxicity of the mixture.   Methods   Several groups of mice were exposed respectively to NiSO4, K2CrO7, CoCl2 at dose of 2.5, 0.14, 0.41 mg/kg and a mixture of them at 0.09, 0.17 mg/kg according to the ores percentage of average content(Ni: Cr: Co=0.26:0.30:0.02)in the Jinchuan area through intraperitoneal injection for 10 days.Liver cell spare slurry and cell membrane were prepared to assess the activity of Ca2+-ATPase, CaM, MDA and SOD with enzyme and biochemical assay.   Results   The enzyme activity of Ca2+-ATPase and SOD were inhabited and the content of CaM decreased and meanwhile MDA was increased by NiSO4, K2CrO7, CoCl2 and the mixture.In addition, the mixture toxicity were stronger than that of NiSO4, K2CrO7, CoCl2 lonely.   Conclusion   The mixture could cause joint toxicity in the body of mice and inhabit the activity of Ca2+-ATPase and decrease the content of CaM and increase the peroxidation function of liver cell membrane so as to damage the liver.However, the mechanism of joint toxicity on the mixture should be studied further.

Abstract:
  Objective   To clarify the feasibility of seleniumag ainstarsenic-induced blood lipids changes in rat and its dose range characteristics.   Methods   The rats were randomly divided into control, arsenic, selenium, arsenic and selenium in combination, respetively.A fter various treatments, the blood lipids were determined.   Results   In comparison with the levels of total cholesterol(TC), trig lyceride(TG)and high-density lipoprotein(HDL)in control group, there was a significant decrease in TC and TG and arise in HDL in 1/5 LD50 arsenic group.Relative to those in 1/5 LD50 arsenic group, there was a significant difference in TG in 1/5 LD50 As and 1/160 LD50 Se group(P < 0.05), TC and TG in 1/5 LD50 As and 1/120 LD50 Se group(P < 0105).TC, TG and HDL in 1/5 LD50 As and 1/80 LD50 Se group(P < 0.05), respectively.   Conclusion   Arsenic could induce a change in blood lipids spectrum in rat and that selenium could combatagainst this change.1/80 LD50 Se might be the optimal dose for the effect.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study the effect of paradichlorobenzene on the allergic conjunctivitis.   Methods   The effects of different concentrations of paradichlorobenzene were observed by quantitatively measuring the conjunctivitis, which was based on the model of anti-cedar-pollen serum induced allergic conjunctivit is in guinea pigs.   Results   The allergic conjunctivitis was apparently aggr avated when the concentration of paradichlorobenzene was over 4.1 μg/m3 in the air, and most intensive aggravating effect was obtained at a dosage of 41 μg/m3 paradichlorobenzene, which persisted for more than 1 week.   Conclusion   The paradichlorobenzene had the effect of immunotoxicity, and apparently agg ravated allergic conjunctivitis at lower concentration.

Abstract:
  Objective   To study the effect of drinkingalcohol heavily on expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in spermatogenic cells.   Methods   The animal model of drinking alcohol heavily was administered alcohol through gastric tube in rats.Then the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in spermatogenic cells were investigated with the immunohistochemistry and image analysis.   Results   The positive cell expression of bcl-2 in each genocyte was 96±33.74, 156.6±28.52 respectively, which was lower than the control(222.6±56.86, P < 0.01).Over doses use of alcohol for a long time could obviously reduce the number of cells of expressing Bcl-2 and the intensity of its expression(P < 0.01), and increase the number of cells of expressing Bax and the intensity of its ex pression in gonocyte(P < 0.01), increased the number of apoptosis of spermatogenic cells.   Conclusion   Alcohol could reduced the expression of bcl-2, promoted the expression of Bax in gonocyte and the apoptosis of gonocyte.
Study on inhibition of mammary tumor by flavonoids crude extract in wheat germ

Abstract:
  Objective   To investigate whether the flavonoids crude extrct in wheat germ could inhibite the mammary tumor induced by 7, 12-dimethlben z〔a〕anthracene and clarify the possible inhibitory machenism.   Methods   Seventy female Sprague-Dawley(SD)rats aged 50 days were randomly divided into four groups: control group(10), mammary tumour group(20), low dose experimental group(20)and high dose experimental group(20).Except of rats in control group, each rat in other groups was given 15 mg 7, 12-dimethylben z〔a〕 anthracene(DMBA)dissolved in 1.5ml plantoil for twice every other two week by gavage.While the rats in low and high dose experimental groups were given forage contained of 2% and 10% flavonoids crude extract of wheat germ respectively, rats in control and mammary tumor groups were given basic forage.After 24 weeks administered DMBA to rats, the glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione Stransferase(GST)activity and glutathion(GSH), malondialdehyde(MDA)level were measured respectively in blood and liver of rats.   Results   The flavonoids crude extract could enhance the GSH-Px, SOD, GST activity and GSH level in blood and liver of rats, decrease the MDA level(P < 0.05).   Conclusion   The flavonoids crude extracthad the anti-oxidation, which demonstrated one of mechanisms of chemophylactic effects on mammary tumor.

  Objective   To observe the effect of marine algal polysaccharide on immune function of irradiated mice.   Methods   The spontaneous incorporation of 3H-TdR into thymocytes, proliferation response of splenocytes to ConA and LPS and mixed lymphocyte reaction was examined.   Results   Marine algal polysaccharide could enhance spontaneous incorporation of 3H-TdR into thymocytes, accelerate the proliferation of T and B lymphocytes and increase the abilities of mixed lymphocyte reaction.   Conclusion   Marine algal polysaccharide had significant effect on protecting immune function from irradiation injuries.

Abstract:
  Objective   The antimutangenic and antineoplastic effects of ganoderma lucidum spore powder were studied to provide scientific basis for exploiting health function of ganoderma spore power.   Methods   Antimutangenic effect of ganoderma lucidum spore powder was testified based on the mice bone marrow cell micronuclei test and the mice testis chromosome aberration; Antimutangenic effect of ganoderma lucidum spore powder was testified based on S-180 and H-22 tumor cell transplanting test.   Results   The micronuclei frequency induced by cyclophosphamidum in mouse bone marrow cells and chromosome aberration frequency induced by mitomycinc were both inhibited significantly by ganoderma lucidum spore powder.   Conclusion   Ganoderma lucidum spore powder had preventive effects on DNA damage in body cell and germinal cell, and had a inhibitory effect on tumor growth.

  Objective   To study the epidemiolog ical feature of railway injury in China and find out the causes of injuries.   Methods   To collect the record of fateful and great railway injuries in China from 1990 to 2000, and analyze the data by circular distribution and chi-square test.   Results   From 1990 to 2000 the tendency of railway injury was descending.There was a centralized tendency of month distribution to July(α=202.63).More injuries happened on interval railroads(59.62%)and railway stations(31.86%).The major responsibilities were train drivers(37.72%), truck maintenance workers(23.68%), and non-railway staff(15.79%), etc.The main causes of railway injury were dereliction of duty(19.87%), ag ainst regulations(18.61%), facility trouble(17.67%)and natural calamity(9.78%).   Conclusion   The numbers of railway injury in China are fluctuating.Major factors are human factors, facility trouble and natural calamity.

  Objective   To investigate measles neutralization antibody level in healthy population of Qujing city for providing scientific evidence for the implementation of measles control measures.   Methods   A total of 205 serum samples of healthy persons composed of 4 age groups were randomly collected from 6 cunties or cities(districts)to detect measles neutralization antibodies.   Results   Measles neutralization antibody positive rate was 94.63% with a GMT of 1:34.94.77.56% people's neutralization antibody was more than 1:16.Although, GMT had no significant difference among positive rates, there was significant difference among GMTs by regions, age groups, measles immunization history and disease history.   Conclusion   Child -bearing women had immunity to measles in certain degree and the schedule that the first dose was given at 8 month of age was suitable.The reason for the raising of measles incidence rate in our city was that there were some weaknesses in the EPI work and that the protective measles antibody level was lower.

  Objective   To estimate the prevalence of HGV/GBV-C in HIV-infected people and discuss the effect of HGV on HIV clinical progress.   Methods   ELISA was applied to detect HGV-Ab and HIV-Ab in villagers who were interviewed in HIV epidemic region.   Results   Out of 328 HIV positive villagers, 210(64%)were positive with HGV-Ab.However, the ratio of co-infected HGV in patients who were AIDS or died of AID was comparatively low.   Conclusion   Co-infected HGV can problely slow the progress of HIV.

  Objective   A 1:1 case-control study was carried out to asses the dietary factors of epidemic hepatitis A.   Methods   126 cases of acute hepatitis A and 126 controls wre interviewed.Odds ratios and their 95% confidence limits were computed.   Results   Eating raw and roast corbicula leana, oyster, and Jiaban shrimp were the dietary factor of hepatitis A.   Conclusion   The department concerned should enhance the sanitary administration and hepatitis A virus monitoring of seamost products such as shell and crust.

  Objective   To research the regulation and influential factors of selenium-releasing concentration in selenium-supplement cup.   Methods   To screen out the formula of selenium-supplement reagent, combine the reagent and instrument to adjust the concentration of selenium and search for the suitable radius of the instrument and select the appropriate dose of the reagent.   Results   Under following circumstances, water temperature 20-100℃, turbidity 3-5 degree, pH 6.5-8.5, usual cations and anions in water in accordance with the state standard, the concentration of selenium in water is controlled within 30-46 μg/L.   Conclusion   By checking out water quality, the filtering water supplement cup accords with the state drinking-water sanitary standard and the concentration of selenium tallies with the state mineral water criteria.

  Objective   To study psychological factors affecting condom use among unlicensed protitutes using social cognitive theory and to provide some valuable information for the relevanthealth intervention.   Methods   All female workers who were working in the Kala-OK places were sampled and surveyed one-to-one by the structured questionnaires in one county of Guangxi.   Results   One hundred and seventy-six questionnaires were obtained and 120 questionnaires were qualified.Respondents'self-efficacy in condom use and their positive expectation on condom use were the determinants of the condom use, which can explain 12.8% of the variation in condom use among unlicensed prostitutes.The effect of self-efficacy on condom use was greater than that of positive expectation.The social influence and respondents'negative expectation on condom use did not enter the model of predicting condom use.   Conclusion   The health intervention program should be focused on improving self-efficacy and positive functions of condom use among unlicensed prostitutes.

  Objective   To evaluate the six-month effectiveness of Shanghai Chronic Disease Self-Management Program.   Methods   The study was a community-based randomized controlled trial.954 volunteer participants with hypertension, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, asthma, diabetes, and COPD, were randomized to treatment group or control group.Analysis of covariance based on Rank Scores(Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel Statistics)was used to compare six-month changes of 20 outcome variables(Self-Management Behaviors, Self-Efficacy(SE), Health Status and Health Service Utilization)for 430 treatment subjects and 349 control subjects who complete 6-month study.   Results   Treatment subjects, compared with controls were demonstrated significant improvement in one of four self-management behaviors(treatment subjects averagely increased 0.33 more scores in practice of cognitive symptom management).Treatment group increased 0.69 and 0.63 scores separately in SE to manage symptom and SE to manage disease in general.They also demonstrated significant improvement in nine of health status(self-rated health, health distress, fatigue, shortness of breath, pain, disability, illness intrusiveness, depression and social/role activities limitation)(allP < 0.05).They also had fewer visits of 0.01 frequency to emergency room on average(P=0.02), fewer hospitalization of(P=0.01).   Conclusion   Shanghai Chronic Disease Self-Management Program improved participants'health behavior, self-efficacy, parts of health status, fewer visits to emergency room and hospitalization after 6-month implementation.

  Objective   To investigate the extent and the relative changes of the equalities in health among population in Yuzhong county.   Methods   Whole group was divided into four subg roups according to the educational level of the individuals.With the six-month prevalence of disease as the health indicator, cross sectional data of 1993 and 2001 were analyzed and the logistic analysis and the relative index of inequity(RII)were used to measure the inequalities in health.   Results   The inequalities in health existed and favored the hig her educational level groups.In 1993, RII was 0.76 for men and 0.32 for women; RII increased to 0.75 and 0.17, respectively in 2001.The gaps in health were greater in women than in men, and the relative changes were also greater for women than for men.   Conclusion   Education played an important role in health inequalities, especially for women.To reduce the gaps in health, the education work should be streng thened as well as improving other conditions.

  Objective   To study the present situation and the affecting factors of quality of life(QOL)among retired elderly people in Hefei.   Methods   A cross-sectio nal, epidemiological study was conducted with the participation of 633 elderly subjects, aged 60 years and over, selected randomly from 15 stratified sampling units.Data were collected through individual interviews using standardized health-related QOL questionnaires and a socio-demographic health information form.   Results   Of the 633 subjects, 70.6% had chronic diseases or disabilities, and 71.9% had perfect activities of daily life, and 74.7% were satisfied with their fitness.The average scores of loneliness, Life Satisfaction Index A(LSIA), social support, and family function were 37.85, 10.08, 33.95, and 23.80 respectively.The results of multiple variables analysis indicated that lonelness, family function, social support, chronic diseases, economic situation, diet and nutrition, sleeping, exercise, occupation, age, and so on.were important determinants of life satisfactio n.Loneliness, social support, sleep and exercise were the three powerful predicting variables of life satisfaction.   Conclusion   It was the future directions for elderly health care and social service to pay attention to elderly psychological and mental health care, and make use of the function of society and family in improving the QOL of the elderly people.
