Abstract:
Objective To carry out a field study on an oral mucosa transudation (OMT) test kit for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and type 2 (HIV-1/2) antibody detection among men who have sex with men (MSM) and to evaluate its sensitivity, specificity, efficiency, positive predictive value and negative predictive value.
Methods Oral mucosal transudate specimen and serum samples were collected among 391 MSM recruited at gay bar, voluntary counseling test (VCT) clinics; then an on-site detection for HIV-1/2 antibody with the OMT test kit and blood rapid test kit was conducted . The differences in detection results of the two methods were compared.
Results The detection results of OMT test kit demonstated a sensitivity of 93.52%, a specificity of 99.65%, an efficiency of 97.95%, a positive predictive value of 96.43%, and a negative predictive value of 98.95%, respectively.
Conclusion The OMT test kit is of high predictive value for HIV-1/2 antibody sceening and is appropriate for wide utilization in on-site screening of HIV infection among MSM at gay bar, club, bath and garden.
