Abstract:
Objective To examine the prevalence and related factors of comorbidity of chronic diseases among community elderly in Wuhan communities.
Methods Using multistage random sampling, we conducted a face-to-face questionnaire survey among 628 residents aged ≥ 65 years in four communities of Wuhan city in August 2018. We adopted logistic regression model to analyze related factors of comorbidity of chronic diseases among the elderly.
Results The prevalence of chronic diseases and comorbidity of chronic diseases were 78.62% and 50.96% among the 622 valid respondents (264 males and 358 females). The results of logistic regression model indicated that aged 80 – 84 years (odds ratio OR = 1.828, 95% confidence interval 95% CI: 1.026 – 3.258), with a body mass index (BMI) of 24.0 to 27.9 (OR = 2.434, 95% CI: 1.321 – 4.483), with BMI of ≥ 28 (OR = 4.014, 95% CI: 1.826 – 8.826), having an education of high school or technical secondary school (OR = 0.559, 95% CI: 0.301 – 0.093), and living alone (OR = 2.452, 95% CI: 1.458 – 4.123) were related factors of comorbidity of chronic diseases among the respondents.
Conclusion Aged 80 – 84 years, with the BMI of ≥ 24, having low education, and living alone are risk factors of comorbidity of chronic diseases among community elderly in Wuhan city and the elderly with those characteristics should be concerned and intervened by relevant agencies and their family members.
