Investigation on relationship between annual family income and overweight, obesity in Nanjing

Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between annual family income and overweight, obesity in Nanjing residents. Methods Population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on local residents elder than 35 years in three urban districts and two rural counties. Results The proportion of participants with BMI above the healthy weight range was 44.8%,of which 33.0% were overweight and 11.8% obese.Significant differences were found in the prevalence of overweight and obesity between urban and rural, and among age groups;but not between genders. After adjusting for possible confounding factors,it was found that adjusted odds rations(OR)of overweight and obesity increased gradually with the increase of annual family income level for all participants.Further, women, urban residents,middle-aged,participants in the higher annual family income were more likely to be overweigh or obese. Conclusion The proportion of adults aged over 35 years with BMI above the healthy weight range was positively associated with socio-economic status(SES)in Nanjing residents.
