Abstract:
ObjectiveTo study the effects of fish oil supplementation on the percentage of neutrophils(Neu%),the percentage of eosinophils(EOS%),interleukin-8(IL-8),eotax in in induced sputum and on pulmonary ventilation function of children with asthma.
Methods63 children with asthma were randomly divided into two groups:conventional group and treatment group. The conventional group was treated with conventional methods. The treatment group was given additional fish oil supplementation besides conventional treatment.IL-8,eotaxin,Neu%,EOS% in induced sputum and FEV 1.0%, PEF% were measured before and after the tr eatment.
ResultsThe Neu%,IL-8 in sputum increased and negatively correlated with FEV 1.0%,PEF% (
P<0.01)among the childr en with asthma.Compared with conventional group, the Neu%,IL-8 decreased significantly and FEV 1.0%,PEF% increased(
P<0.05)among treatment group after the treatment.
ConclusionThe fish oil supplementation improves ventilation by alleviating airway inflammation in children with mild-moderate asthma.
