Abstract: Objective To study the status and influencing factors of smoking attempt among junior high school students in Qingdao city and to provide evidences for making strategies for tobacco control among the students.Methods With multi-stage stratified cluster sampling,we recruited 6 155 students from 44 junior high schools and conducted a questionnaire survey among the students with Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) between September and November 2014.The collected data were analyzed with SPSS software after weighting process.Results The rate of smoking attempt was 7.3%among the students and the rate for the boys (11.0%) was higher than that for the girls (3.5%);the smoking attempt rate increased with the schooling grade,with the rates of 3.7%,6.7%,and 10.3%among the students of grade one,two,and three and a significant difference (P<0.05);the urban students had a significantly higher smoking attempt rate than the rural students (8.4%vs.6.4%,P<0.05).The results of univariate analysis showed that grade,gender,residential area,familial environment,social environment,and attitude towards smoking were significant influencing factors of smoking attempt among the students (P<0.01 for all).The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the students of grade two or grade three,male gender,with parental smoking,with smoking friends,witnessing smoking of a teacher,and exposed to tobacco advertisement were more likely to attempt smoking.Conclusion Smoking attempt behavior is influenced by individual,familial,school,and social factors among the junior high school students in Qingdao city.
