Abstract: The prevalence of cigarette smoking and diabetes are extremely high in China.Recently,many epidemiologic studies have shown that cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor for the development of diabetes.For the relationship between smoking and abnormal glucose metabolism,studies have proved that cigarette smoking and cigarette extract can cause insulin resistance or pancreatic beta-cell damage in vivo and in vitro,but the most of the results are from animal studies and a few of the studies were involved in molecular mechanisms of the effects.The study reviews published epidemiologic and pathophysiologic researches on the association of cigarette smoking with abnormal glucose metabolism for providing a theroretical basis for prevention and treatment of diabetes.
