HIV testing and its influence factors among men who have sex with men in Beijing

  • Objective To study the rate and predictors of recent HIV testing among men who have sex with men (MSM)and to provide the evidence for the intervention program among MSM.Methods The MSM were recruited through peer referring and internet advertising between August and December in 2009 in Beijing.Intervieweradministered interview s were conducted to collect information on demographics and behaviors.Blood samples were collected for HIV and syphilis test.Results Of the 962 eligible MSM surveyed,51.4% had test for HIV in the last 12 months.The prevalence of HIV infection and syphilis was 6.3% (61)and 17.7% (170),respectively.Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that self-identification as homosexual(odds ratioOR=1.41,95% confidence intervalCI:1.04-1.90),understanding the 8 HIV-related know ledge correctly(OR=2.22,95% CI:1.67-2.95),receiving HIV prevention services recently (OR=10.01,95% CI:6.22-16.11),looking for partners from park or bathhouse(OR=0.63,95% CI:0.46-0.86),and reporting unprotected sex in the last 6 months(OR=1.65,95% CI:1.24-2.18)were associated with recent HIV testing.Conclusion Interventions improving AIDS awareness and prevention services are needed to further enhance the proportion of HIV testing among MSM,especially those looking for partners from park or bathhouse.
