  • Objective To investigate the correlation between mental status and quality of life(QOL)in patients with head and neck carcinoma after treatment. Methods Questionnaires were administered to 116 patients after operation or radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the Department of Oncology,No.456 Hospital of Ji'nan Military Region of People's Liberation Army. Results The total scores of the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire(UW-QOL)in the patients and the controls were 717.45±109.63 and 867±90.64,respectively.Compared with the control, the patients had lower scores in every domain of life quality(P<0.05).Significant correlations were found between anxiety, depression and the most domains of the questionnaire(P<0.05)based on the analyses of Spearman correlation.Anxiety and depression were main influencing factors to the quality of life in the patients according to the results of logistic regression analyses with the standardized regression coefficients of-0.597 and-0.830,respectively.There was a close relationship between mental status and the quality of life in the patients. Conclusion Mental health promotion could be an effective intervention method and better mental health can improve the QOL of the patients with head and neck carcinoma.
