Prevalence of type 2 diabetes and its risk factors among residents in Zhangjiagang city

Objective To investigate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)among residents in Zhangjiagang city and to explore risk factors of T2DM.Methods A multi-stage stratified sampling was used to select the residents above 18 years old and living in Zhangjiagang city more than 6 months.The data were collected with a questionnire survey,physical examination and laboratory test.Logistic regression was used to analyse risk factors related to T2DM.Results Totaly 8 175 residents(3 690 male and 4 485 female)were selected.The prevalence of T2DM was 6.86% and that of the impaired fasting glucose(IFG)was 10.39%.No significant difference in the prevalence between the male and female was observed(χ²=0.739,P>0.05).After adjusting for gender and education level,the results of logistic regression analyses showed that aging,family history of diabetes,blood pressure,central obesity,high total cholesterol(TC),high triglyceride(TG)were risk factors of T2DM,while exercise was a protective factor.Central obesity, high blood pressure,high TC and high TG were all significantly associated with T2DM in univariate analyses.Conclusion Aging,family diabetes mellitus history,central obesity,exercise,blood pressure,TC,and TG are main influencing factors of T2DM among residents of Zhangjiagang city.
