Involvement of non-governmental organizations in HIV/AIDS control and prevention in China, 2012 – 2014

  •   Objective  To analyze the involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) control and prevention in China between 2012 and 2014 and to provide references for future policy making.
Methods  NGOs involved in HIV/AIDS control and prevention between 2012 and 2014 were invited to fill a web based questionnaire on basic status of the organizations and the collected information were checked through telephone interviews. The NGOs which were involved at least 2 years during the survey period were included in the analysis.
Results  Totally 905 NGOs were surveyed in the study and most of the organizations were found between 2006 and 2010.Of the 905 NGOs, 86.1% (779) had not registered in departments of civil affairs or business; 26.6% (241) did not have full time working staff. The number of working staff and annual expenditure of the NGOs decreased but the number of registered NGOs increased during the 3-year period.
Conclusion  The annual expenditure is an important factor affecting the number and continual involvement of NGOs in HIV/AIDS control and prevention. The number of NGOs providing web based service had increased between 2012 and 2014 in China.
