Validation of routine quality indicators for swimming pool water in online monitoring

  •   Objective  To verify the consistency between routine indicators for swimming pool water quality resulted from online monitoring and on-site rapid testing.
Methods  Four swimming pools were randomly selected in Ma'anshan city of Anhui province, Yiwu city of Zhejiang province, and Tianjin city, respectively. For all the study sites, online monitoring equipments were used to carry out real-time swimming pool water quality monitoring; meanwhile on-site rapid manual detections were conducted for inlet swimming pool water for the comparison of the detection results. Residual chlorine, turbidity, pH value, and temperature were four routine indicators included in the study and a total of 326 validation tests were performed 3 times each day from July to November 2015.
Results  There was a significant correlation in residual chlorine of water samples between online monitoring and on-site rapid testing for all the four study sites, with the correlation coefficients of 0.684 – 0.994 (P < 0.0001 for all). The correlation in pH values between online monitoring and on-site rapid testing for the three study sites was significant, with the coefficients of 0.510 – 0.895. The correlation in turbidity of the water samples between the two detection patterns varied greatly and the coefficients ranged from 0.221 to 0.695. The coefficients of water temperature measurements between the two detection patterns were from 0.397 to 0.879.
Conclusion  There is a strong overall consistency between the detection results of online monitoring and on-site rapid testing for routine indicators of swimming pool water quality but the consistency differs greatly among the indicators and the monitoring sites.
