Analysis of the results on cancer risk assessment and screening of urbanresidents in Shenyang

  •   Objective  To examine risk and screening outcome of five major cancers among urban residents aged 40 − 74 years in Shenyang city of Liaoning province and to provide references for sustainable implementation of early cancer diagnosis and treatment among urban residents.
Methods  We enrolled 102 913 permanent residents aged 40 − 74 years in 24 communities of two urban districts in Shenyang city of Liaoning province with cluster sampling. Using approaches and questionnaire for Cancer Screening Program in Urban China, we carried out face-to-face interviews to assess risks of lung, breast, liver, upper gastrointestinal, and colorectal cancer among the participants and conducted screenings on the five cancers among the high-risk participants from November 2016 to March 2019.
Results  Of the participants, 26.95%, 18.29%, 18.94%, 24.60%, and 20.38% were assessed as with high-risk of lung, breast, liver, upper gastrointestinal, and colorectal cancer; for the high-risk participants, 32.29%, 26.87%, 33.47%, 17.40%, and 22.52% took part in subsequent screening on those five cancers. Among the participants screened, the detection rate of positive pulmonary nodule/suspected lung cancer, breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) category 4 and above, liver space-occupying lesions, upper gastrointestinal cancer/precancerous lesions, and colorectal cancer/precancerous lesions were 8.77%, 7.24%, 0.52%, 11.14%, and 34.65%, respectively.
Conclusion  In 2016 − 2018 for the urban residents aged 40 − 74 years in Shenyang city, the proportion of those with high-risk of five major cancers were relatively high; the participation rate of screening on liver cancer was relatively high among the people assessed with high-risk of liver cancer; and the detection rate of colorectal cancer/precancerous lesions was relatively high for the participants of colorectal cancer screening.
