Prevalence survey on smoking habit among undergraduate students of Guangdong province

  Objective   To understand smoking behaviors and influential factors among college students in Guang dong province.

  Methods   Aclustersamplingof 350 college students who participated in Propag anda activity on World's No Smoking Day were investigated by cigarette smoking questionnaire.Statistics analysis were performed by using ttest, χ² test, logistic regression analysis.

  Results   about 12.03% college students smoked(male: 15.97% and female: 8.16%).There were significant differences in the smokingrate among college students from different schools, different genderand different district.College students had universally insufficient knowledge about smoking, which including soking did harm to health, smokinginfluenced economical imcome and po isonous component such as nicotine.85.7% college sutdents became to smoke before seniorhigh school, 42.9% smokerwanted to get rid of it.Smoking behaviorwas greatly influenced by peercompanions and parets.The majorrisk factors that contributed to smoking behaviorwere refreshing, gettingrid of depression, leisure and pastime, communication and commerce, imitation and curiosity.The smoking proportion in college students were positively correlated to personal average monty expenditure(r_s=0.277 7, P=0.000 1).

  Conclusion   The rate of smokingin college students was lowerthan that of the adults.It was affected by multiple factors, so effective health education and interventions shoule be implemented.
