Investigation on economic burden of injuries and life lost among urban and rural residents in Shandong province

  •   Objective   To understand the years of potential life lost(YPLL)and economic burden due to injuries among the urban and rural residents in Shandong province.
      Methods   From different areas and on different economic levels, fourcities and six counties(24, 438 inhabitants included)were randomly selected by multi-stage stratified sampling.Utilizinghousehold questionnaires aboutinjury events and economic burden during 2003, a cross-sectional study was conducted by unified-trained inquirers among all the family members.
      Results   The injury incidence during 2003 was 7.25% in some urban and rural areas in Shandong province, and the standardized incidence was 7.31%.YPLLattributed to average injury death was 32.21, work years of potential life lost(WYPLL) was 26.32 and valued years of potential life Iost(VYPLL)was 12.59.In all, 1771 injury cases happened during the year, which led to economic loss of 4, 867, 900 RMByuan.The average economic loss foreach injury case(includinginjury death)was 2, 748.67 RMB yuan.
      Conclusion   Injury events bringheavy economic burden to individuals and theirfamilies in some urban and rural areas in Shandong province.Health education and intervention should be strengthened to key population.
