Survey on knowledge, attitude and behavior about human avian influenza in employees in poultry and non-poultry industry

Objective To understand the knowledge,attitude and behavior about human avian influenza in employees in poultry and non-poultry industry and to provide basis on making up measures for prevention and control of human avian influenza.Methods 259 poultry employees and 129 non-poultry employees were investigated.Results The awareness rates of human avian influenza in poultry and non-poultry employees was 34.03% and 29.75%,respectively.95.83% of the poultry sold in farm produce and poultry wholesale markets had guarantee certificate,but only 62.69% scattered-fed poultry was injected by bird influenza vaccine.The percentage of wearing work clothes,gloves and masks every day was 19.79%,32.81% and 29.17%.25.87% of poultry employees and 21.71% of non-poultry employees disposed the sick or dead poultry directly and the percentages of washing hands after touching the sick or dead poultry in the two population were 81.85% and 92.25%.The agreement rates on the policy of "killing poultry in fixed place and selling live poultry is forbidden" in poultry employees and non-poultry employees were 20.08% and 31.78%,while the agreement rates on the policy of "cleaning,disinfecting the market and killing all live poultry in the market everyday" were 33.98% and 54.26%.Conclusion There is high risk for infection of human avian influenza in poultry employees in Dongguan,such as lack of knowledge,insufficienct individual protection,incorrect disposal of sick or dead poultry,low immunization rate of scattered-fed poultry.
