Prevalent charateristics of common chronic diseases among adults in Beijing

  • Objective To understand the prevalence of common chronic diseases in adults of Beijing.Methods To tally 22206 adults aged 18-79 years were randomly selected with stra tified multi-stage cluster sampling method.All participants were invited to receive a face-to-face questionnaire interview,physical examination and laboratory tests.Results The prevalence of hypertension,diabetes,overweight,obesity,central obesity and dyslipidemia were 30.3%,6.1%,36.2%,19.1%, 51.5%,and 34.2% among the participants,respectively.The p revalences of the diseases were higher in the men compared with that of in the women(38.8%,8.2%,42.5%,22.5%,62.8%,and 42.9% in the men,and 27.9%,5.7%,34.7%, 18.4%,47.9%,and 30.4% in the women,respectively).The rates of diabetes and dyslipidemia in the participants of urban area(7.1%and 38.4%)were higher than that of in rural(6.3% and 31.0%).But the prevalences of hypertension and obesity among the adults in rural area(34.8% and 23.0%)were higher than that of in urban area(31.6% and 18.7%).In age groups younger than 50 years old,the prevalences of the diseases were higher in men.But the rates of diabetes,obesity, central obesity and dyslipidemia were higher in women in the age groups older than 50 years old.The preva lence of hypertension and overweight tended to besimilar between elderly men and women.The higher preva lences of chronic diseases were observed among younger and middle age men and menopause women.Conclusion Obesity and dyslipidemia are the new health problems among adults in Beijing.The chronic disease burden in rural area is similar to or even higher than that in urban area.
