Contraception knowledge among undergraduate students

  • Objective To understand the status of contraception knowledge among underg raduate students in Guangzhou city and to develop effective contraceptive service.Methods A sampling survey was conducted wtih stratified cluster sampling and a self-designed anonymous questionnaire among 763 undergraduate students from two medical universities and two non-medical universities in Guangzhou.Results The students had a better knowledge on condomuse and taking contraceptive pills(99.3%and 97.6%,respectively).The awareness rate of medical students was higher than that of non-medicals tudents for in trauterine device,contraceptive diaphragm,subcutaneous plant(P<0.01 for all).The awareness rate of male students was higher than that of females tudents for ejaculation in vitro,contraceptive diaphragm(P<0.01 for all).The awareness rate of medical students was higher than that of non-medical students for howto use safe period contraception(P<0.05).The awareness rate of male students was higher than that of female students for the use of condom and ejaculation in vitro(P<0.01 for all).45.6% of the students did not knowthe four kinds urgent contraceptive method.Only 46.9% of the students knewthat the conventional contraception could not be replaced by urgent contraception.39.7% of the students knewthat it is easy to become pregnant in the menstrual cycle.81.4% of the students knewthat the sexual intercourse could result in pregnancy occasionally.65.1% of the students thought that the society should provide active contrace ptiveservice to the unmarried young people.84% of the students thought that the social contraceptive service was deficient or serious deficient for unmarried young people.Conclusion The under graduate students' contraceptive knowledge is low.The under graduate students should get more contraceptive knowledge and learn to protect them selves to reduce physical and psychological health trauma.
