Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in community elderly adults of Shanghai city

  • Objective To explore the prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MS)and its risk factors in community elderly abults of Shanghai city.Methods A ccording to diagnostic criteria of Chinese Diabetes Society's recommendation,619 adults aged above 40 years were selected and investigated.Results The prevalence rate of overweight/obesity,hypertension,diabetes,blood lipids abnormalitiy,and MS was 57.7%,43.5%,16,6%,53,3%,and 12,0%,respectivesy.The residents of older age had higher preva lences of the abnormalities and the middle age gorup had a higher prevalence of hyper tension.The value of body mass index(BMI),systolic blood pressure(SBP),diastolic blood pressure(DB P),total choles terol(TC),triglyce ride(TG),high-density lipoprote in-cholesterol(HDL-C),and fasting blood glucose(FBG)increased with the number of metabolismabnorm a lities combinationitems.There was a significant correlation between the value of BMI and SBP,DB P,TG,and HDL-C.Conclusion The prevalence rate of MS and the risk factors were different in different age gorups in community eledrly adults of Shanghaicity.The overweight and obesity residents are the high-risk population of MS.
