Prevalence of infertility and its related factors among newlyweds in minority area

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the incidence of infertility among newlyweds in Guangdong minority area.MethodsThe couples married in 2009 in Liannan Yao Autonomous County,Lianshan Zhuang Autonomous County,and Lianzhou city of Guangdong province were selected with stratified cluster sampling for a cross-sectional study.The demographic and fertility information were collected with a standardized self-administered questionnaire.ResultsAmong the 4 404 couples,550 were not pregnant one year after they stopped using any contraceptive measure.The infertility rate was 12.5% for all couples,12.0% (411/3 527)for Han,16.7% (101/603)for Yao,and 13.9% (38/274)for Zhuang, respectively.There were significant differences in infertility incidence among the three groups(P=0.002).The factors related to infertility included the couples'age,marital relationship,quality of sexual life,the ethnic group,educational level, occupation,and menstruation of the females.ConclusionThere were significant differences in infertility incidence among Han,Yao and Zhuang couples and the rate for Yao was the highest.The older couples have a higher the infertility rate.There was a relatively low infertility rate among the couples with a wife with junior high school education,being farmer and having sexual harmony.
