Association of mental health with self congruency and social support in coal workers' pneumoconiosis patients

  • Objective To examine the status of mental health and its relation to self congruency and social support among coal workers'pneumoconiosis(CWP)patients. Methods CWP patients from one enterprise in Chongqing city were investigated with Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90),Self Consistency and Congruency Scale(SCCS),and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS).Results The 212 CWP patients recruited were male and at age of 35 to 58 years with an average age of 46.7 years. For the patients the total score of SCL-90 was 150.92±0.37 and was lower than that of the national norm with a significant difference(P<0.05).Mental health was significantly correlated with multiple factors of self congruency and social support(P<0.05 or P<0.01)among the patients.Multiple stepwise regression analyses showed that independent variables included in the equation were self and experience disharmony, objective support, general self congruency, and total score of social support, with the standardized partial regression coefficient of 0.442,-0.215,0.194,and-0.086,respectively.Conclusion The mental health of CWP patients is generally poorer than that of the national average. The mental health and self congruency and social support are closely correlated among the CWP patients.
