Incidence of infertility and its influencing factors among married residents in Guangdong province

  • Objective To dynamically analyze the infertility incidence and its influencing factors among married residents of Guangdong province.Methods With cross-sectional study method,18 893 pairs couples married in 2007 were selected from 11 counties in Guangdong by stratified cluster sampling for a questionnaire survey.Results Totally 2 516 couples were identified as infertility,with an infertility incidence of 13.3%.Couples in Pearl River Delta Region and the eastern of Guangdong had a higher infertility incidence with an odds ratio(OR) of 1.665(95% confidence interval:1.461-1.958)than those in the western Guangdong.Couples with female spouse and husband of Yao ethnic had a higher incidence than those couples with Han and Zhuang(P<0.05).The infertility probability increased with the age of the couples(95%CI:1.024-1.050 for husbands and 1.028-1.061 for wives).In the female groups,workers had a higher risk of infertility (OR=1.277,95%CI=1.077-1.513) than peasants,and smokers had a higher risk of infertility(OR= 1.627,95% CI:1.033-2.564) than non-smokers,and women with abnormal menstruation periods and amount of bleeding had a higher risk(95%CI of OR=1.374-1.935,1.233-1.554).Conclusion The incidence of infertility among married residents in Pearl River Delta region and the eastern part of Guangdong is higher than those in the western and in northern part of Guangdong province.The incidence of infertility in the minority females is higher than that in the Han.The couples'age,occupation,menstruation,and smoking habit of the females are related to the incidence of infertility.
