Behavior and mental health among new junior middle school students

  • Objective To investigate behavior and mental health among new junior middle school students in Wuhan.Methods Totally 605 junior middle school students in Wuhan were surveyed with Chinese Middle School Students Mental Health Scale(MSSMHS) and a self-designed personal behavior questionnaire.EpiData 3.0 was used to input the data.The data were analyzed with SPSS 17.0.Results The prevalence rate of positive psychological symptoms in the students was 40.7%.Five different types of behavioral problems were identified among the students.Age at first smoking attempt was positively correlated with anxiety,hostility,and psychological imbalance and frequency of fighting was positively correlated with anxiety,hostility,learning stress,maladjustment,and psychological imbalance among the students.The mental health factors were correlated positively with times of playing computer games and negatively with learning attitude.Negative learning attitude and suicidal behavior were risk factors of psychological problem.Conclusion There is a correlation between behavior and mental health and psychological intervention should be taken among new junior middle school students.
