Influence of family environment on mental health in migrant children

  • Objective To examine the influence of family environment on mental health in migrant children.Methods With cluster sampling,858 migrant children from 4 schools in Shenyang city were surveyed with mental health test(MHT) and Family Enviroment Scale-Chinese Vesion(FES-CV) questionnaires.Results There were mental health problems in the migrant children.The study anxiety was the most prevalent with an incidence rate of 48.50%.There were differences in the family environment between healthy and unhealthy children.The cohesion and organization factor scores in unhealthy children(6.61?2.29,4.95?1.86) were significantly lower than those in the healthy children(7.16?1.92,5.31?1.76)(P<0.01).The conflict factor score in unhealthy children(3.06?2.46) was significantly higher than that in the healthy children(2.43?1.98)(P<0.01).There were no differences in the intellectual-cultural orientation factor scores between healthy and unhealthy children.The family environment was correlated with mental health status of the children(P<0.01).Conclusion There were mental health problems in migrant children.The study anxiety and self-blame tendency are major problems among the children.The family environment influence mental health status of the migrant children.
