Active and passive smoking among residents in Changchun city,2013

  • ObjectiveTo analyze smoking prevalence and secondhand smoke exposure among the residents in Changchun city,and to provide evidences for tobacco control.MethodsWith multistage cluster sampling,2 233 families in Changchun city were selected and one member in each of the families was chosen randomly to finish a questionnaire survey.ResultsThe overall smoking rate of the residents was 23.5%,with a higher rate of 43.2% among the males than that of the females(3.8%).The smoking rate of the residents aged 45-64 years was the highest.The average number of cigarettes smoked per day was 14.9±8.3,with a notably higher number(15.3±8.4) for the male smokers than for the female smokers(10.7±6.5).The public places with the highest rate of exposure to second-hand smoke was bars(78.9%),followed by restaurants(72.7%) and indoor workplaces(48.9%) ;male non-smokers had a higher second-hand smoke exposure rate than female non-smokers in public places.The overall second-hand smoke exposure rate at home was 45.8% and the female non-smokers suffered a higher exposure rate of 40.8% than the male non-smokers(22.8%).ConclusionThe rate of smoking and second-hand smoke exposure among the residents in Changchun city are lower than average domestic level;the major places with secondhand smoke exposure are bars,restaurants,workplaces and homes and male smokers is the key population for tobacco control.
