HIV infection among couples and regular sexual partners of HIV/AIDS patients in Fujian province

  • Objective To analyze the prevalence and related factors of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)infection among couples and regular sexual partners of HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS)cases in Fujian province. Methods HIV/AIDS patients first diagnosed between 1 January,2008 and 31 December,2013 were surveyed with a questionnaire and followed up retrospectively to examine HIV antibody positive conversion among their couples and regular sexual partners.Univariate and multivariate analysis were adopted in data analyse. Results Of the 872 patients surveyed,26.5%reported positive conversion of HIV antibody of their couples or regular sexual partners;36.6%reported sexual contact with their couples or regular sexual partners in the previous 3 months at the time of last follow-up.Of the patients reporting sexual contact with their couples or regular sexual partners,93.4% used condom every time during the sexual contacts.Significant differences in HIV antibody positive conversion rate of the couples and regular sexual partners were observed among the patients of different gender, educational background,CD4 count, and condom use.Logistic regression analyses indicated that the factors related to HIV antibody positive conversion of the couples and regular sexual partners of the patients included a male being the HIV positive first(odds ratioOR=0.338,P<0.001),with the education of college or above(OR=0.209,P=0.007),with a CD4 count greater than 350/mm3(OR=0.521,P<0.001),and using condom in every sexual contact(OR=0.054,P<0.001).Conclusion Couples and regular sexual partners of HIV/AIDS patients are key populations at risk of HIV infection.Notification procedure of HIV antibody detection should be standardized to control HIV transmission between HIV/AIDS patients and their couples and regular sexual partners.
