Sentinel surveillance on prevalence HIV/AIDS among drug users in Liao-ning province,2010-2013

Objective To examine human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)prevalence and behavioral characteristics among drug users(DUs),and to provide evidences for AIDS prevention and control.Methods Data on sentinel surveillance for HIV/AIDS among DUs from 2010 through 2013 were collected from 5 monitoring points in Liaoning province and analyzed with SPSS 19.0.Results From 2010 to 2013,the number of DUs recruited by the sentinel surveillance was 1664,1656,1939,and 2009,respectively.Among the DUs surveyed,the annual HIV positive rate was 0.1%,0.4%,0.1%,and 0.1%and the annual hepatitis C virus(HCV) positive rate was 19.9%,14.8%,10.2%,and 7.6%,with a significant decreasing trend(P<0.05).For the 4 years among the DUs,the knowledge rate of AIDS was 76.5%,82.4%,83.2%,and 86.3%and the consistent condom use rate in commercial sex was 31.2%,33.3%,38.8%,and 51.7%,respectively,and both the rates showed an increasing trend(P<0.05 for all);in addition,the prevalence of injection drug use also showed a decreasing trend(P<0.05),with the yearly rate of 40.1%,31.8%,26.7%,and 22.8%,respectively.Conclusion The HIV positive rates among DUs in Liaoning province maintained at a low level,but the HCV positive rates was at a high level from 2010 to 2013,suggesting effective intervention on HIV/AIDS high risk behaviors needs to be promoted among DUs in the area.
