Prevalence and risk factors of diabetes mellitus among adult residents in Wuhan city

  • Objective To explore the prevalence and risk factors of diabetes mellitus(DM)among adult residents in Wuhan city and to provide evidences for prevention and control of DM.Methods Totally 2836 adult residents aged 18 years or older were selected using stratified cluster sampling in Wuhan city and a questionnaire survey was conducted among the participants during October to November 2013.Results Of 2836 adult residents,202 reported suffering from DM and the self-reported prevalence was 7.12%.Of the DM patients,91.09% were under hypoglycemic drug treatment, while only 57.92% reported normal blood sugar level at the survey.Among 184 patients taking hypoglycemic drug,71.74% had oral antidiabetic drugs,15.22% had insulin, and 13.04% had both of the drugs.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that compared to the residents aged 18 to 44 years, the risk of developing DM among the residents aged 45 to 59 years and 60 years or older were 9.43 times(odds ratioOR=9.43,95% confidence interval95%CI=3.38-26.31)and 19.87 times higher(OR=19.87,95%CI=6.66-59.34),respectively.The residents with overweight were 2.86 times(OR=2.86,95%CI=1.12-7.32)and those with obesity was 3.17 times(OR=3.17,95%CI=1.13-8.93)likely to have DM compared with the residents with relative low weight. Conclusion The prevalence of DM among adult residents in Wuhan city was relatively high. The screening and interventions on DM need to be improved among the residents with overweight and obesity and those aged 45 years or older.
