Predictive value of obesity and metabolism indexes for hyperuricemia among rural adult Yi residents in Liangshan region

  • Objective To explore predictive value of obesity and relevant metabolism indexes for hyperuricemia(HUA)among rural Yi residents in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture(Liangshan)of Sichuan province. Methods Stratified random cluster samp1ing was adopted to select 972 permanent residents aged ≥18 years in Liangshan for a cross-sectional study with questionnaire survey, physical examination, and laboratory detection.Spearman correlation was used to analyze the relationship between HUA and obesity indexes and receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve was used to determine the best predictable value of HUA with maximum Gordon's index as the best cut-off point. Results Among the 972 participants(452 males and 520 females),the HUA prevalence rate was 18.7%(27.2%for the males and 11.3%for the females)and the standardized prevalence rate was 22.0%(30.4%for the males and 12.31%for the females);there was a significant gender difference in HUA prevalence rate among the participants(χ2=105.429,P=0.001).There were significant age-differences in body mass index(BMI),waist circumference(WC),hip circumference(HC),waist-to-hip ratio(WHR),waist-to-height ratio(WHTR),total cholesterol(TC),and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)in both the male and female participants(all P<0.05) and a significant age-difference in serum uric acid(SUA)in the male participants (P<0.05).Spearman correlation analyses showed that SUA was positively correlated with BMI,WC,HC,WHR,WHTR,and triglyceride(TG)(all P<0.01)but reversely correlated with high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)(r=-0.132,P=0.005)among the male participants;whereas among the female participants,SUA was positively correlated with BMI,WC,HC,WHR,WHTR,TC,triglyceride(TG),and LDL-C(all P<0.01)but reversely correlated with HDL-C (r=-0.115,P=0.009).The highest area under the ROC curve of BMI for HUA diagnosis was 0.635,with a cut-point of 23.0 kg/m2,for the male participants and that of HC for HUA diagnosis was 0.605,with a cut-point of 87.50 cm for the female participants. Conclusion The prevalences of HUA and obesity are high and obesity and relevant metabolic indexes are of predicative significance for HUA among rural adult Yi residents in Liangshan region.
