Perceptions towards current air quality and control measurement among workers of a factory in Nanchang city

Objective To assess perceptions towards current air quality and its control measurement among industry workers in Nanchang city.Methods Stratified cluster sampling was employed to select 421 workers in a factory in Nanchang city for a a questionnaire survey in April 2015.Results Of the workers,54.2% (228/421) considered that local air quality was poor or very poor;about 80% (333/421) believed that local air quality was even worse than that five years ago.The top three local air pollution sources recognized by the workers were motor vehicle (by 60.1%235 of the workers),waste combustion (54.2%,228),and industrial emission (53.9%,227).There were 89.3% (376/421) of workers considering that the resources for environment protection provided by local government were not enough or too few and the top three measures to control air pollution suggested by the workers to local government were restricting industries with air pollutant emission (by 54.9%231 of the workers),increasing public transport facilities and reducing the number of private cars (54.6%,230),and reducing waste incineration (49.2%,207).Aged ≥50 years,education of junior college or college and above,experience of domestic and overseas travel,suffering from allergic,asthma or upper respiratory tract infection were the influence factors on the perception towards major local air pollution sources among the workers.Conclusion Industry workers in Nanchang city had a higher perception towards local air quality.
