Study on sexual behavior among university students related to STD, HIV/AIDS

  •   Objective   To investigate sexual behavior systematically among university students; to provide evidence and reference for universities and relevant government bodies; to work out strategy for sex education and STD/HIV prevention.
      Methods   Two comprehensive universities were chosen in Zhejiang Province; all grade 1 to grade 4 students in the 2 universities were asked to attend this selfadministered questionnaire survey.
      Results   78.0% of total students attended this survey, and 13.1% of them initiated their sex.The average age for sex initiation was 19.51, only 291 2% sexually active students used condom during their first sex.The average number of sexual partner was 1.54, 10.4% of sex ually active students or their partner had the experience of abortion, and some portion of students had same sex or bisexual behavior, and some had ex perience of buying or selling sex, and 1.4% once were diagnosed as STD.The main place for students to conduct sex was hotel, then at home.The main reason that students used condom was to prevent prengnancy.68.6%-77.1% sexually active students thought their partner, or themselves impossible, very low possible, or lowpossible to be pregnant and contract STD/AIDS.
      Conclusion   The awareness of preventing STD/AIDS among university students is quite low, their selfprotection awareness, and condomuse rate are low too.The main reason for them to use condom is to prevent pregnancy, not to prevent disease.Multiple sexual partner, MSM, bisexual behavior, buying sex and selling sex actually exist.It is revealed that the university students are in practical risk of abortion, STD and HIV infection, so systematic and scientific sex education and STD/AIDS health education and behavior intervention are pressing and urgent.
