Analysis on STD and HIV infection situation in 417 female sex workers

  •   Objective   To understand the infection situation of STD and HIV in sex workers and the rate of condom use in commercial sexual activities and provide scientific basis for conducting interventions on behaviours of this population.
      Methods   A total of 417 sex workers were selected by random sampling method and classified into two types, working for commercial sexual activities in fixed entertainment places and finding clients beside streets.Their specimen of blood and vagina secrete were collected for HIV, syphilis and mycoplasma examination, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and candida albicans culture and diferentiation.The situation of condom use in commercial sexual activities was also investigated by questionaires.
      Results   No HIV positive was detected, but the rate of the sex workers infected with one or several STD was 18.94%, among of which the infection rate of syphilis was 7.38%, gonorrhoeae 3.57% and mycoplasma 10.95%.The infection rate in sex workers on the street for clients was 50.00%, higher than that of working in fixed entertainment places.The condom use rate in the former was lower than that in the later.
      Conclusion   The risk of HIV infection in sex workers on street for clients was higher than that in fixed entertainment places.
