Experimental study on effects of calcium intake on serum lipids concentration in hypercholesterolemic women

  • Objective To explore the effects of calcium intake on serum cholesterol concentration in hypercholesterolemic women and provide basic evidence for prevention of cadiovescular disease by lowering serum cholesterol concentration via regulating dietary pattern and nutrient intake reasonably. Methods Ten hypercholesterolemic women were supplemented with 1000 mg of calcium in calcium carbonate each day for 28 days based on their regular diet.Another ten were set as control.Serum lipid concentrations of all subbjects were measured on the final day of the experimental period. Results At the end of the calcium supplementation period, profiles of serum lipids of the experimental group were lower than that of the control group without statstic significance.Compared with the initial day, except apolipoprotein A,the profile of serum lipids in experimental group was significantly low on the end day of the experimental period(P<0.05).Total cholesterol concentration decreased from 5.78±0.65mmol/L on the initial day to 5.16±0.61mmol/L on the final day.Accordingly, except apolipoprotein A(P<0.05),serum lipids in control group were no significant change. Conclusion Supplementation of 1000mg of calcium to hypercholesterolemic women every day is beneficial to improving the serum lipid profile, especially the serum cholesterol level.
