Type 2 diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting blood glucose among Tibet citizens

  • Objective To investigate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM)and impaired fasting blood g lucose(IFG)among citizens in Lhasa,T ibet.Methods 370 Tibetan man and women 30 to 70 years old selected randomly were invited fo r the health survey.The World Health Organization diagnostic criter ia in 1999 for DM and IFG were used.Questionnaire survey,blood pressure,fasting blood glucose profile and anthropometr ic measurement were carried out.Results The o ver all prevalence of DM was 7.6%(2.2% vs 10.3% in men and in women,P=0.009)and there was significant difference between men and women.The overall prevalence of IFG was 13.5%(11.0% vs.15.0% in men and in women,P=01405).The age-standar dized prevalence o f DM was 7.2%(2.1% vs.8.9% in men and in women).Conclusion The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing compared with previous study in Lhasa in 2002.The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is higher in females than in males.The high prevalence of IFG is found in men and women.
