Investigation on relationship between environmental selenium exposure and body selenium content of old people in Shandong

Objective To invest igate the seleium levels of enviro nment and human body in Shandong and to analyze the relat ionship between env ironmental selenium exposure and body selenium in old people.Methods Two study sites with different environmental selenium lev els were selected.Soil,drinking water,food,blood and toenail samples of 500 rural Chinese ag ed 65~80 were collected from each of the two sites.Selenium contet in these samples was analyzed.Correlation between the selenium levels of environment and those of human body were analy zed stat istically.Results Environmental selenium levels of the two study sites were as follows:the selenielm levels of soil were 0.042 3±0.012 7 and 0.451 2±0.022 4 mg/kg; the drinking water samples,<0.001 mg/L;foodstuff(wheat),0.025 7±0.001 4 and 0.093 4±0.024 mg/kg;g reengrocery,0.002 6±0.000 6 and 0.041 5±0.034 2 mg/kg.Selenium levels of human body were as follows:blood selenium 0.053±0.007,0.097±0.013(Lg/ml);toenail selenuum 0.211±01 039 and 01 434±01 098(Lg/g).Conclusion Zichuan is among normal environmental selenium level regions,Gaomi is one of low environmental selenium level regions.The body selenium levels of the elder subjects in Gaimi,Zichuan are normal.There is a correaltion between selenium leves of environment and human body.
