Influence of pregnant syphilis on infant growth and development

  • ObjectiveTo explore the influence of pregnant syphilis on infant growth and development.MethodsThe growth and development state of 43 infants with mothers suffering from pregnant syphilis and giving the birth to their children in Maternnal and Child Care Hospital of Zhoushan city during the year of 2008-2009 were investigated.ResultsCompared with the standard of growth and development in 2006 by World Health Organization(WHO),the weight(42 day to 18 months),height(at 42 day for male and 42 day to 12 months for female),and head circumference(at 42 day for female,at birth,42 day,6 months, and 12 months for male)of the infants with pregnant syphilitic mothers were higher than the reference(P<0.05).Compared with the standards of infants aged from 0 to 7 years in China, the weight(at 42 day for male and at 9,12 month for female),height(at 42 day for male and female and at the birth for male),and head circumference(at 42 day and the birth for male and female)of the infants with pregnant syphilis mothers were higher than the reference(P<0.05).The growth and development of the infants with mothers suffering from pregnant syphilis and receiving formal anti-syphilis treatment were better than those of the infants with pregnant syphilis mothers with informal treatment but the differences were not statistically significant.ConclusionThe growth and development status of the infants with pregnant syphilitic mothers were generally good but their growth was slowed down with the increase of age, therefore, comprehensive prevention and control measures should be taken among the infants.
