Influencing factors of hypertension prevalence among middle-aged and elderly people in China

  •   Objective  To examine influencing factors of hypertension prevalence among the middle-aged and elderly people in China and to provide evidences for developing relevant intervention measures.
Methods  Data on 6 366 middle-aged and elderly people were extracted from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) conducted in 2015. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze influencing factors of hypertension in the participants.
Results  Totally 2 744 hypertensives were identified and the hypertension prevalence was 43.10 % among the participants. The results of unconditional logistic regression demonstrated that older age, hyperlipemia history, hyperglycemia history, central obesity, and high body mass index were risk factors for hypertension; while female gender, married, weekly physical activity, and monthly social activities were protective factors for hypertension among the participants.
Conclusion  Obesity, overweight, the history of hyperlipidemia, and the history of hyperglycemia are the main factors affecting the prevalence of hypertension in the middle-aged and elderly people in China.
