Participation in basic public health service among adult residents in Shaanxi province: a cross-sectional survey

  • Objective To examine the rate and influencing factors of participation in basic public health service (BPHS) among adult residents in Shaanxi province and to provide a reference for the implementation of BPHS.
Methods Using multistage sampling, we selected three towns in each of the three counties located in northern, central, and southern Shaanxi province; then we randomly recruited 90 residents aged 18 years and above in each of the towns selected for a household questionnaire survey in December 2016.
Results Of the 694 eligible respondents, 78.7% reported the participation in at least one item of BPHS, with the planned immunization vaccination being a BPHS item with the highest participation rate (100%) and health education with the lowest participation rate (46.3%). Multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated that major influencing factors for the participation in BPHS were age (41 – 64 years vs. ≤ 40 years: odds ratio OR = 0.583) and living region (central Shaanxi vs. northern Shaanxi: OR = 5.138; southern Shaanxi vs. northern Shaanxi: OR = 2.234). The majority of the respondents (62.2%) reported being aware of items of BPHS via household communication with medical personnel.
Conclusion The implementation of BPHS is unbalanced for various service items and among different regions and the popularization of BPHS among the residents is mainly through traditional pattern in Shaanxi province. The results suggest that efficient measures should be promoted by relevant institutions for balanced development of BPHS.
