Effects of psychological capital and perceived organizational support on work engagement among nurses working in hemodialysis rooms

  •   Objective  To examine current situation of work engagement and associations of psychological capital and perceived organizational support with work engagement among nurses working in hemodialysis rooms.
      Methods  We recruited 379 nurses working in hemodialysis rooms from 21 grade A tertiary hospitals in 5 cities of Liaoning province for a self-administered survey between July and September 2017. Work Engagement Scale, Perceived Organizational Support Scale and Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ-24)were adopted in the survey.
      Results  Among the participants, all dimensions of psychological capital and perceived organizational support were significantly correlated positively to all dimensions of work engagement, with the correlation coefficients ranging from 0.293 to 0.930 (P < 0.05 for all). Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that work seniority, type of employment contract, career prospect, working support, and tenacity (β = 0.301 – 4.371, P < 0.001 for all) significant influencing factors of work engagement, explaining 54.7% of the total variation.
      Conclusion  Effective measures to improve psychological capital and perceived organizational support of the nurses working in hemodialysis rooms should be taken by hospital managers to promote the work engagement of the nurses.
