Prevalence of risk factors for chronic diseases and its determinants among adult residents in Jinjiang district of Chengdu city

  • Objective To examine the prevalence of risk factors of four major non-commnicable chronic diseases (cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and its determinants among adult residents in Jinjiang district of Chengdu city, Sichuan province.
Methods We recruited 13 678 residents aged ≥ 18 years using stratified multistage cluster random sampling in 16 communities of Jinjiang district for a questionnaire survey and physical examination in 2017. The prevalence of risk factors for the 4 major chronic diseases as current smoking, frequent alcohol drinking, overweight/obesity, and abdominal obesity among the participants were calculated and their determinants were analyzed with non-conditional logistic regression model.
Results Among the participants, the prevalence rate was 14.8% (gender- and age-adjusted rate: 19.5%) for current smoking, 4.3% (4.3%) for frequent alcohol drinking, 38.6% (33.4%) for overweight/obesity, and 27.2% (22.4%) for abdominal obesity. The results of logistic regression analysis revealed that aged 45 – 59 years and with junior high school education were risk factors for current smoking; aged 45 – 59 years or aged more than 60 years and being married were risk factors for frequent alcohol drinking, overweight/obesity, and abdominal obesity; being divorced was a risk factor for frequent alcohol drinking and overweight/obesity; and being widowed was a risk factor for overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity, respectively.
Conclusion Risk factors for major chronic diseases are prevalent among adult residents in Jinjiang district of Chengdu city and comprehensive interventions on the risk factors should be promoted among the residents, especially among those aged 45 – 59 years.
