Prevalence of insomnia among adult residents in Zhongshan city: a cross-sectional survey

  •   Objective  To investigate the prevalence of insomnia among adult residents in Zhongshan city.
      Methods  We conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey on insomnia symptoms among 12 182 residents older than 18 years randomly selected in 25 urban districts and rural towns in Zhongshan city of Guangdong province between February and May 2017.
      Results  In the 11 001 residents completing the survey, the self-reported prevalence rate of insomnia symptoms was 10.02% and the rate was 11.76% and 8.17% for the male and female participants; the total scores were 1.19 ± 0.01 for insomnia symptoms, 0.37 ± 0.01 for difficulty in falling asleep, 0.48 ± 0.01 for difficulty in falling asleep again, and 0.35 ± 0.01 for early awakening. The results of regression analysis demonstrated that the prevalence of insomnia symptoms was significantly influenced by gender, age, occupation, marital status, the number of children, and family economic condition (P < 0.05 for all).
      Conclusion  The prevalence rate of insomnia symptoms was relatively high and mainly influenced by gender, age, occupation, marital status, the number of children, and family economic condition among adult residents in Zhongshan city.
