Acceptability of 6-month prophylactic isoniazid therapy in latently infected close contacts of tuberculosis patients

  •   Objective  To examine the acceptance of 6-month isoniazid prophylactic therapy (IPT) and its impact factors in latently infected close contacts of tuberculosis (TB) patients.
Methods  We recruited 991 latently infected close contacts (aged averagely aged 39 years, 61.8% females) of TB patients at designated TB treatment clinics in 17 counties/districts of 3 provincial-level regions in China 3 and carried out a 6-month IPT in the contacts from January 2018 to November 2019. Questionnaire interviews and laboratory tests were performed in the contacts to collect information on the acceptance and correlates of the IPT.
Results  Of all the participants, 633 (63.9%) received the 6-month IPT. The results of univariate logistic analysis demonstrated that compared to the those contacting with the TB patients being female, being other occupation groups, and having high or low average family annual income per capita, the participants contacting with the TB patients being male (odds ratio OR = 1.38), being student (R = 2.26), and with a middle income (OR = 1.54) were more likely to receive IPT significantly (P < 0.05 for all).
Conclusion  The acceptability of 6-month prophylactic isoniazid therapy among latently infected close contacts of tuberculosis patients is mainly influenced by gender, occupation and family average annual income of the patients the contacts being exposed to.
