Epidemiological characteristics of 58 cluster cases of novel coronavirus disease in Baodi district of Tianjin city

  •   Objective  To examine initial symptoms and epidemiological characteristics of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Baodi district of Tianjin city for providing evidences to early diagnosis and prevention/control of COVID-19.
      Methods  With case interviews, we conducted a retrospective survey among 58 laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases in Baodi district of Tianjin city and diagnosed during January 31 – February 26, 2020 after the epidemic outbreak related to showing up in a department store building in the district.
      Results  Of the 58 cases, 6 (10.34%) were stuff working in the department store; 19 (32.76%) were consumers ever showing up in the store; and 33 (56.90%) were close contacts of the stuff and consumers; 30 (51.72%) and 28 (48.28%) were urban and rural residents. The male to female ratio of the cases were 0.66 : 1 and 82.76% (48) of the cases were aged 30 – 74 years. The initial symptoms of the cases included fever (in 53.45% 31 of the cases) , respiratory symptoms such as cough, sore throat, runny nose, and nasal congestion (in 25.86% 15 of the cases), and fatigue and muscle soreness (12.07% 7). All the cases had an incubation period of ≤ 14 days, with a an average incubation period of 8.17 days.
      Conclusion  For the public place-related COVID-19 cluster outbreak, the majority of the confirmed cases are females and aged 30 – 74 years; main initial symptoms of the cases are fever, respiratory symptoms, and fatigue and muscle soreness; the incubation period of the cases is less than or equal to 14 days.
