Characteristics of trans-provincial close contacts of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 in Sichuan province

  •   Objective  To analyze the characteristics of trans-provincial close contacts of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Sichuan province and to provide evidences for effective inter-province surveys on close contacts of COVID-19 patients.
Methods  We collected all data of inter-province surveys on 4 276 trans-provincial close contacts of COVID-19 patients in Sichuan province during the period from January 20 to March 13, 2020 and analyzed the data with descriptive statistics.
Results  The average age of the trans-provincial close contacts was 36.43 ± 16.82 years. Of all the trans-provincial close contacts, 28.94% (898) and 22.14% (687) were immigrants in Sichuan province from Hubei province and Chongqing city; while, 33.67% (395) were migrants from Chengdu – the capital city of Sichuan province to other provinces. The majority (58.61%, 2 506) of the trans-provincial close contacts were exposed to COVID-19 patients due to taking common vehicles with the patients during traveling or commute.
Conclusion  In Sichuan province, the trans-provincial close contacts of COVID-19 patients were mainly migrant people from epicenter regions or their adjacent areas and experienced exposure due to taking common vehicles with the patients.
