Prevalence of mild cognitive impairment and its influencing factors among community elderly in Shenyang city: a cross-sectional study

  •   Objective  To examine the prevalence and influencing factors of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among community elderly in Shenyang city, Liaoning province, and to provide evidences for Alzheimer′s disease prevention.
Methods  Using stratified random cluster sampling, we recruited 1 500 permanent residents aged 60 years and above at 15 communities in 5 urban districts of Shenyang city and carried out face-to-face interviews among the elderly during May – October. 2019. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and a self-designed questionnaire were adopted in the survey.
Results  Valid information were collected from all the 1 500 elderly (57.5% males and 58.8% aged 60 – 69 years). Totally 454 participants were identified having MCI and the MCI prevalence rate was 30.3%. The results of unconditional multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that with a monthly household income of ≤ 3 000 yuan (RMB) per capita and suffering from diabetes were risk factors for MCI but physical exercise, reading habit, and having a dietary pattern with much meat were protective factors against MCI in the elderly.
Conclusion  Among community elderly in urban Shenyang, mild cognitive impairment is prevalent and mainly influenced by monthly household income per capita, physical exercise, reading habit, dietary pattern, and whether suffering from diabetes.
