Safety of free vaccination of 23 valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine among elderly residents in Yuxi city, Yunnan province: a monitoring data analysis

  •   Objective  To evaluate the safety of 23 valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) vaccination in elderly residents of Yuxi city, Yunnan province for providing a reference to the promotion of PPV23 vaccination in local elderly population.
      Methods  The data on adverse events following immunization (AEFI) of free PPV23 vaccination among the 60 years old and above residents in Yuxi city from January 2018 through December 2020 were collected from the Yunnan Province AEFI Monitoring Information Management System and analyzed with descriptive statistics.
      Results  Free PPV23 vaccination was performed among a total of 243 670 elderly residents in the city during the 3-year period. Among the elderly vaccinated, 40 AEFI were reported, with an incidence rate of 16.42/100 000. Of all the reported AEFI, 77.5% were general reactions; 12.5% were abnormal reactions, and 5% were psychogenic and coupling reactions, respectively. All the AEFI cases were improved or cured one month after the incidence of AEFI.
      Conclusion  Free vaccination of 23 valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is safe among residents aged 60 years and above in Yuxi city.
