Impact of COVID-19 epidemic on tuberculosis control in Jingzhou city

  •   Objective  To examine the impact of coronavrius disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic on tuberculosis (TB) case notification in Jingzhou city, Hubei province.
Methods  The information on all TB incidents registered in Jingzhou during 2017 – 2021 were collected from TB Information Management System of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. SPSS 23.0 software was used in data collation and analysis. The reported TB incidents and incidence rate and bacteria positive rate before COVID-19 epidemic (November 29, 2019 – January 24, 2020), during intensive control period (January 25 – March 27, 2020) and regular control period (March 28 – May 29, 2020) of the epidemic were described to analyze the influence of the epidemic on TB control and prevention in the region.
Results  Reported TB incidence rate decreased during the 5-year period in the city. The proportion of TB incidents registered in the intensive control period (7.24%) was lower than that in the period before the epidemic (42.94%) and that in the regular control period (49.72%), the reported TB incidence rate decreased significantly and the bacteria positive rate fluctuated significantly.
Conclusion  From 2017 through 2021, reported TB incidence rate decreased in Jingzhou city but the occurrence of COVID-19 epidemic induced a decline in reported TB incidence rate and in detection rate of bacteria positivity.
