Investigation on nutritional status of iron and retinal in anemic pregnant women

  •   Objective   To investigate the nutritional status of iron, vitamin A and riboflavin in anemic pregnant women.
Methods   430 anemic pregnant women and 292 nonanemic pregnant women were randomly recruited from Shenxian country, China. The daily intake of dietary nutrients was collected by the 24 h-diet recall. The levels of serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, riboflavin and retinal were determined.
Results   The vegetable foods accounted for a high percentage both in anemic and nonanemic pregnant women. The average daily intake of iron was near to its RNI; the level of serumiron in anemia group was remarkably lower than that of the nonanemia group.About 85% of anemic pregnant women were less than 14 Lg/L of plasma ferritin and the averagely 31.42 nmol/L of sTfR.The percentages of riboflavin and retinol deficiency were 62.90% and 63.09% in anemic pregnant women, respectively, which were much higher than that of the nonanemic group(P < 0.01).
Conclusion   The anemia of pregnant women might be related to the iron poor bioavailability, and the deficiencies of retinal, riboflavin.
