Antagonistic effects of chlorpromazine and verapamil on toxicity induced by cadmium

  •   Objective   To study the effects of Chlorpromazine(CPZ)and Verapamil(Ver)on the toxicity induced by cadmium(Cd).
Methods   Thirty-two Wistar rats were divided into four gr oups randomly, i.e., control group, Cd alone group, CPZ or Vertreatment group.Cd, Malondialdehyde(MDA), Glutathione(GSH)contents and Glutathione peroxidatase(GSH-Px), Superoxide dismutase(SOD)activities in the liver and renal cortex were determined.Urinary N-acety-l B-D-glucosaminidase(NAG)and alkaline phosphalase(ALP)activities were also measured.
Results   MDA, GSH contents in the liver and renal cortex and urinary NAG, ALP activities of Cd alone group were significantly higher than those of control group, but SOD activities in the renal cortex were significantly lower than those of control values.MDA contents in the liver and renal cortex of CPZ treatment group were lower than those of Cd alone group, but GSH-Px and SOD activities in the renal cortex were significantly higher than those of control and Cd alone groups.MDA contents in the liver and renal cortex and GSH contents in the renal cortex of Vertreatment group were significantly lower than those of Cd alone group, but GSH-Px activities in the renal cortex were significantly higher than control values, and SOD activities in the renal cortex were significantly higher than those of Cd alone group.Urinary NAG activities of CPZ and Vertreatment groups were significantly lower than those of Cd alone group.
Conclusion   CPZ and Ver had antag onistic effects on the toxicity induced by Cd.
