Epidemiology investigation on metabolic syndrome among elders in urban communities of Guiyang city

Objective To study prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MS)among the elders aged 60 years and over in Guiyang.Methods Using multistage sampling,1508 old people aged 60 years and over were surveyed among 26 communities of Guiyang.Chi-square test and t test were used in data analysis.Results Among the elders aged 60 years and over,MS prevalence rate was 23.5% and adjust prevalence rate was 21.04%.There was statistical difference between men and women.There were not statistical differences for MS in different occupation,age and education.Hypertension showed a high rate among MS indexes.Combination of overweigh,hypertension and non-normal serum lipid was the highest in MS combination.Conclusion The prevalence rate of MS is high in Guiyang.It is an importanthealth strategy to prevent cardiovascular diseases among the elders in Guiyang City.
